Chungnam has the largest number of foreigners (136,006) living in non-metropolitan areas, and the ratio of foreign residents to the total number of residents is 6.2%, the highest in the country. Since the Overseas Koreans Office was established in Incheon, the argument is that the immigration office should be located in a non-metropolitan area. According to the researcher, Cheonan and Asan are located in the central part of the country and are adjacent to the KTX, SRT, Gyeongbu Expressway, and the Seoul-Sejong Expressway under construction, making them easy to access from other cities. It is close to the metropolitan area, so it can handle the administrative needs of foreign residents in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon, and it is located between Sejong and Seoul, so it has excellent accessibility to central administrative agencies. In addition, many companies, including large corporations such as Samsung Display and Hyundai Glovis, are concentrated here, making it easy to secure jobs, and 12 universities are located here, making it easy to train foreign talent, organize support and settlement education programs, and conduct research on policies related to foreigners. Cheonan and Asan created a petition in favor of attracting the office with 290,000 and 135,000 signatures, respectively, in February of this year, and are coordinating the schedule for submitting the signatures to the Ministry of Justice. Chungnam Governor Kim Tae-heum said, “Chungnam (KTX Cheonan-Asan Station) is the optimal location with sufficient location, settlement, and policy conditions to attract the Immigration Office,” and “We will definitely attract the Immigration Office by strengthening the logic for attracting the Immigration Office and developing a provincial-wide movement.” ◆ Strengthening the logic for attracting the office and forming a ‘one team’ in regional politics are necessary = The entire country is jumping into the competition to attract the Immigration Office.
