(Asan=Yonhap News) Reporter Yoo Eui-ju = The city of Asan, South Chungcheong Province, announced on the 26th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Capstone Meta IDC PFV (Project Finance Investment Company) for the construction of the Asan Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Center in the city hall situation room the previous day, and will begin full-scale construction of the 320 billion won project.
This agreement is a follow-up to the investment memorandum of understanding signed during the 7th popularly elected government, and is significant in that it marks the beginning of a project that has undergone extensive preparation and has entered the concrete implementation phase.
According to the agreement, the city will provide administrative support to enable the data center to function as a regional innovation hub, in conjunction with AI policies such as the strengthening of AI computing resource utilization infrastructure, which will support industry, academia, and research by securing the nation's cutting-edge graphics processing units (GPUs).
The AI data center will be built on a 7,022 square meter site within the Smart Valley General Industrial Complex in Eumbong-myeon, Asan City. Construction is scheduled to begin in November and will last for 32 months, with test operations.
The initial investment of 150 billion won has been expanded to 320 billion won to meet the demand for high-performance AI data centers.
The city expects that once the data center is operational, it will significantly contribute to manufacturing innovation through convergence with key local industries such as automobiles, displays, and semiconductors, as well as the creation of quality jobs and revitalization of the local economy.
Mayor Oh Se-hyun stated, "Through the AI data center, we will strengthen the city's future competitiveness and strengthen policies and infrastructure to ensure that AI and digital innovation industries permeate the lives of citizens."
